So set the scene: an empty gravel pit in the middle of nowhere, a rifle, a few jars of some special powder (as well as the proper licensing, permission, equipment etc). Set it all up and the next thing you know bang- KAPOW there is an explosion that you actually feel hit you hard from 150 yards away. That’s how exploding targets work and wow are they fun!
What is a binary reactive (exploding) target? It is comprised of oxidizers and fuel, shipped and stored separately in the same container. Once you are ready to shoot, open the jar and remove the package of fuel powder and mix it in with the oxidizers. We have found you get a better reaction from mixing it outside the jar in another container then pouring it back into the jar. Screw the lid back on, set it somewhere with safe surroundings and far away from the shooter following the manufacturers recommendations. Keep in mind that it can start dry brush and grass on fire and that all standard firearm safety practices must be followed as well.
Exploding targets are sold under many brand names, all with slight differences in the recipe, but all have the same basic design. Oley’s has just brought in an entire skid of Thundershot exploding targets from Gryphon Energetics.
You may only possess 20kg (44 pounds) of binary explosives at one time. They are sold in 1-pound jars and only 1 pound maybe mixed at a time. Once mixed, it can no longer be transported, and must be discharged. It will require a high-velocity impact from a bullet to set it off. Dropping it or shooting it with too low of a velocity of bullet will not set it off.
Want to try some? A P.A.L. or Pyrotechnics license is required to purchase an exploding target. Oley’s will be bringing them to the Nipissing Rifle and Revolver Gun Club’s gun show on September 8th for the low price of $10 taxes in that day only. And we are giving away a brand new gun too!
